Going, going, gone

As you read these notes, I will be in a place far, far away. Even further away from civilisation, phone, internet and just about anything you can think of.

I am about to embark on a journey that will take me deep into the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, followed by a short, but oh so sweet trip to the Sahara sand dunes. I haven’t been to Morocco in about 5 years, and this will be the first time I will visit it as a photographer. It will also mark the first time I make it into the backcountry and desert. Needless to say, I am mildly excited…

I will not have access to the net for the first two weeks and as such will be unable to provide updates, but will do so as soon as I have a chance. Until then, keep well and wish me some great light!

Sleepless in Paris

Well, not exactly in Paris…only about 6000km away, but sleepless nonetheless. I just realised recently, as I stumbled across my archives, that I posted very few images from my trip to Paris in September of last year. So I figured that, in keeping with this week’s theme of large cities with beautiful architecture, some images from La Ville Lumiere would be most appropriate. As you will notice these are not your classical views from the city. In addition to the “not to be missed” highlights, Paris offers some great opportunities for abstracts. Here are a few that caught my attention during an afternoon at La Defense.

Sights from Boston

As I mentioned in my last couple of posts, I spent easter week-end discovering Boston, Massachusetts (how the hell do you spell this thing?!!?). The whole trip was decided in a matter of a few hours and I didn’t have much of a chance to do any extensive research. Enters my friend David Clapp, a fantastic UK-based photographer, whom I knew had visited the city last fall. An email and a 3-hour chat over skype and I was as prepared as could be with tips, info and scouting report all granted generously.

There were a few things that I knew I just couldn’t miss. You have already seen some of the shots I captured from the top of the Prudential Tower. The one thing that was highest on my list was the Stata Center at MIT. This building was designed by my favorite architect: Frank Gehry, so I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Tomorrow, I will be posting some more shots from the place which just oozes with curves, textures and colours, a heaven for abstract photography.

You obviously can’t go to an American city and not attempt at least one cityscape. Boston is surrounded with water and points of view abound for some fabulous views of the downtown core. Here is one taken not too far from a Boston institution for all seafood lovers: The barking crab.

No visit to Beantown is complete without a pilgrimage to see some of its fabled educational institutions. Funny enough, while the Harvard campus didn’t do much to inspire me, the T station was a heck of a lot more entertaining.

Continuing with the T station theme, this one features the MGH station with the reputed Massachusetts General Hospital in the background at twilight. All in all, this was a terrific trip and I highly recommend you visit Boston if you have a chance. Great people, vibrant city, beautiful architecture, awesome food, culture galore, basically everything you would want in a world class city.

Moody Coast

So here I am playing catch-up with my keywording, yet I just can’t help myself but try and play around with some of my unprocessed shots (hours of keyword entry isn’t exactly my definition of fun!). As I mentioned in a recent post, I am also starting to discover Lightroom 2.5. The program doesn’t really do much for me, except for the cataloging and keywording functions which are quite a bit more advanced than bridge. In any case, some of the cool things in LR are the Black and white presets. This is a shot that dates back to almost two years ago, in the Olympic coast of Washington State in Northwestern US. It was quite a dark and grey evening, which made for some moody images of the legendary Ruby Beach. I thought the Selenium look worked quite well with this shot. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Mountains, where art thou?

I need my mountain fix. Badly. It has been sometime since I have actually had a chance to enjoy in mountains. Man, I do miss them. For a guy who grew up by the ocean, I never really expected mountains to have such a profound effect on me. But ever since I set foot in the Rockies a couple of years back, all I have been thinking of has been mountains and more mountains. I mean, it’s not even funny, I see a mountain shot and I just cringe, not because I don’t like it, but really because I am just dying to be there so badly. I am really considering taking Darwin Wiggett’s winter workshop in february but have to figure a few details out before I know if I can make it. If you have a chance check him out. The guy is one of Canada’s premiere landscape photographer and great guy to boot.

In the meantime, all you get from me is a few shots from my Rockies trip in 2007…
