November Winter

There is something that really just boggles my mind, and, despite having spent 5 years in this city, still doesn’t make much sense.

Every year, at just about the same time, the winter chill sets in the Ottawa air. You can feel it coming, fast, but, it isn’t quite cold yet, certainly not sustained cold. Yet, you drive 20-30 minutes north into the gatineau hills (that’s a pretty generous appellation if you want my opinion), and winter is actually ALREADY there. I wanted to take advantage of that this past week-end and try and get some frozen lakes before they fill up with snow. Well, the lake ain’t frozen just yet…but…SNOW IS EVERYWHERE!!! I just couldn’t believe it. It was just an inch or so, but  gee…it’s only the first week of November! It’s not supposed to stay yet.

Mountains, where art thou?

I need my mountain fix. Badly. It has been sometime since I have actually had a chance to enjoy in mountains. Man, I do miss them. For a guy who grew up by the ocean, I never really expected mountains to have such a profound effect on me. But ever since I set foot in the Rockies a couple of years back, all I have been thinking of has been mountains and more mountains. I mean, it’s not even funny, I see a mountain shot and I just cringe, not because I don’t like it, but really because I am just dying to be there so badly. I am really considering taking Darwin Wiggett’s winter workshop in february but have to figure a few details out before I know if I can make it. If you have a chance check him out. The guy is one of Canada’s premiere landscape photographer and great guy to boot.

In the meantime, all you get from me is a few shots from my Rockies trip in 2007…

Emerging from the Abyss

Yes, I am still alive, yes, barely…I am just out of my hole briefly to let you know I am (sort of) still among you.

Most people hate November, cuz, well it sucks, but also, cuz all the colours have left, the trees look like crap and …it’s friggin’ cold. While I could hardly argue against this sort of feelings, I have to say that the more I look at it the more I see new opportunities during this dreaded month. Last week I probably saw the two best sunsets of the year, and missed both (if you don’t believe me, check it out for yourselves: #1 here; #2, here). But I also have tons of ideas on more intimate compositions that this month’s weather and look suits perfectly, now if I only could go out and do that…hopefully soon, may be this week-end if my buddy Justin is onboard (I know he always is).

In the meantime here is a shot I took last week-end. It is not a composite or a multiple exposure. This is the shot as I took it. I was waiting for sunset only to realise that the full moon was rising behind me. Nikon D700, 70-300VR at 200mm, ISO320, f/13 and 1/20s.
