December 2009 Desktop Wallpaper and Calendar

This month’s desktop wallpaper comes straight from Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. Though it doesn’t look like it, there’s a massive 2000+ meter high peak lurking just behind the fog/cloud. I was attracted to this scene because of the contrast between the burnt black trees and the white background. As usual, the background is available in three sizes.

Moody Coast

So here I am playing catch-up with my keywording, yet I just can’t help myself but try and play around with some of my unprocessed shots (hours of keyword entry isn’t exactly my definition of fun!). As I mentioned in a recent post, I am also starting to discover Lightroom 2.5. The program doesn’t really do much for me, except for the cataloging and keywording functions which are quite a bit more advanced than bridge. In any case, some of the cool things in LR are the Black and white presets. This is a shot that dates back to almost two years ago, in the Olympic coast of Washington State in Northwestern US. It was quite a dark and grey evening, which made for some moody images of the legendary Ruby Beach. I thought the Selenium look worked quite well with this shot. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hit the Road, J… uh, Younes

As you are reading these lines I am probably on my way to Quebec city to judge the Photolife photography competition over the week-end. I am really excited as this is my first experience doing this and I can’t wait to see the almost 10,000 entries. I will also take the opportunity to hook up with some friends and start planning some more photo outings. In the meantime here is one that I shot the last time I visited Quebec. It’s another one of those unkeyworded, unprocessed shots that I found lying around…2788 to go!

Shattered

A shot I just could never process right. As I am playing around with Lightroom I accidentally selected the cyanotype preset and sort of liked how it came out, a couple of tweaks later, here is the result. This is from the ceiling at the Hull Museum of Civilisations.

Water etching

This past week-end I undertook the very pleasant task of catching up on keywording and updating the metadata on my image bank…boy was I off the mark. I knew I was lagging behind, but only a few months…somehow though it turned out that I had lost the keywording on almost 6000 pictures, yes your read it SIX THOUSAND…AAAAARGHHH. So, you’ve guessed, it’s been a highly entertaining week-end on that front.

On the plus side, the exercise allowed me to clean up my archives, catch up on some post-processing, but most pleasantly to uncover some forgotten or unknown keepers. It was not all futile. This particular shot was taken on the edge of the frozen Ottawa river at the end of last winter. It’s a macro shot that represents and area about 2-3 inches long. KIDS: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. A few minutes after taking this shot I found myself at the bottom of the river, gasping for air and trying desperately to save my gear, and mostly myself…
