A sliver of light

As my workshop students and I were waiting for sunset last Sunday, the sky had all but covered up leaving mostly a dull, gray light behind us, without any trace of direct sunlight. As I always preach, you always have to be aware of your surroundings and even though you might know what you want to shoot, it’s always wise to look behind you from time to time. As I took a peak behind me I saw that a tiny sliver of light had managed to get through the loud cover and light up a tiny set of trees not too far from where we stood. My students couldn’t at first understand why I was yelling incomprehensible phrases while running around like a crazed man. Quickly though, they saw what I was desperately pointing at. The light didn’t stay there very long, so I didn’t have much time to play around and try different compositions.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this one.

  1. You can often find stronger photos when you turn around and shoot away from the sunset/sunrise. It’s always good advice to be aware of your surroundings, as you mention above.

    Lovely light in this one.

  2. I think I like mine more!

It’s beautiful and it just goes to show you that you can’t let yourself be caught up so much in the “moment” of what is in front of you that you forget to look behind or around you.

Until I can grow that third eye behind my head, I’ll keep looking behind me every time I am on a shoot!
